26-29/3/2018: Study Visit of the project team in Italy {Milan - Reggio Emilia - Bologna - Padua – Venice}

A LIFE UrbanProof delegation, in representation of main technical partners MANRE, NOA, NTUA, IUAV  and of the Municipality of Lakatamia, Reggio Emilia, Peristeri and Strovolos, has been visiting 4 Italian cities that are developing different adaptation measures and approaches. 

In Milan, Reggio Emilia, Bologna and Padua, the UrbanProof team had the opportunity to see and investigate how, acting on different scales and themes it is possible to promote feasible adaptation and mitigation project according to local political agenda and different climatic pressures.

Milan with participative actions, in partnership with the project Sharing Cities, is acting on two different plans. On the private field promoting monitoring and smart services on the public plan such as smart bins, free floating car and bike sharing, temperature and pollution monitoring. On the private plan they are reducing energy consumption and introducing comfort increasing solution such as led light, thermal coatings and green facades.

Reggio Emilia Municipality and Bologna are following a more top-down approach to the climate adaptation, introducing new urban forest and drainage system in urban areas, in order to reduce the impacts of flooding and urban heat island. Moreover Reggio Emilia is promoting strong private partnership with local water treatment contractor to enhance the efficiency of the water system in order to reduce water consumption. Bologna in the other hand is valorizing the networking relations with other LIFE such as RainBO and BlueAP to maximise the effort on monitoring and prevention of the extreme events.

Padova, in strict collaboration with IUAV - Planning Climate Change Lab, is promoting with LIFE VenetoAdapt different plans and administrative toolkit to enhance the knowledge of the urban environment in order to develop countermeasures to the climatic risks, also engaging citizens in the process, establishing a strong commitment on the whole social tissue.

Last stop of the study visit has been in Iuav’s Planning University headquarter, where the delegation had the opportunity to discuss on how they are developing their actions, in order to coordinate the future project development and to establish the future collaborations between the project partners.
